From Humanities Graduate to ESG Project Role: Turning Green Transition into Practice

Oskar holds a Master’s degree in the humanities, and although politicians are currently advocating for a cultural and intellectual revival, his experience in the job market told a different story. Across various sectors—communication, journalism, culture—employers seemed unable to recognize the value of a humanities background.

“In my job search, I found that humanities competencies were not prioritized. Employers were looking for practical experience, and I had to admit that during my studies, I hadn’t taken on a student job, internship, or volunteer work that could connect my academic knowledge with concrete skills. I applied broadly—within journalism, cultural communication, communications, and project work—but without success.”

That is why Oskar signed up on  Green Transistion in Practice

A new direction with Green Transition in Practice

I had long nurtured an interest in sustainability and social responsibility, but it always seemed like a closed field for those without a scientific or technical background. However, the course title immediately caught my attention—especially because it emphasized practical application and ESG reporting, which I knew was becoming increasingly important across industries.

When I read the course description, I saw a real opportunity to build concrete knowledge and hands-on experience with sustainability in a business context—and most importantly: a chance to enter a company internship with a clear path toward employment.

“Even if I hadn’t landed a job through the program, I would still feel far better equipped to approach the job search than I did before it started.”

Internship with potential: ESG reporting in the construction industry

Improve Business Academy facilitated an internship match with a mid-sized company in the construction sector that was just beginning to strengthen its efforts within ESG and sustainability. The company needed support in structuring its ESG reporting and working strategically with the green transition.

I was introduced to the ESG framework—how companies address environmental, social, and governance issues—and how all of this is documented and communicated in practice.

I received support from a dedicated subject-matter consultant who introduced me to the key tools used in ESG work. I truly felt that the Green Transition in Practice course was designed to help participants acquire practical, business-relevant skills that could be applied directly in the company.

I also received crucial guidance—both academically and in terms of how to approach the internship with the goal of creating value for the company and potentially securing a position beyond the internship. I felt fully supported by the entire Improve Business Academy team. In addition to the ESG-specific guidance, Anne and Thea played a key role in helping me land a project position at the company where I interned.

A recommendation for academics

To others with an academic background who feel stuck in their job search, I can wholeheartedly recommend Improve Business Academy. You’re not just taught—you’re supported, challenged, and developed. The program is grounded in the real-world needs of businesses, and that makes all the difference when you’re trying to find your place.

Even if the program hadn’t led to a job, I would still feel far more confident in my job search today. I now know how to read a company’s sustainability profile, how to position myself in relation to their green strategy, and how to demonstrate that I understand the business side of sustainability.
